Is it completely up to your family how much home learning you do each week as I am well aware that many of you are involved in after-school activities and other commitments. Below I have outlined the basic home learning requirements needed to sustain your child's learning, along with some other ideas that you can encourage your child to do.
Spelling
Our spelling programme is up and running! Spelling notebooks come home on a Monday and need to be back at school on a Friday. Your child will have five essential words to learn each week. There are many ways to practice spelling at home. Here are a few suggestions...
- Spelling City - The link below will take you to the Spelling City website. I have created word lists that your child can use at home to practice their words. This site is great as it creates games and activities specifically for the words that your child is learning. Check the back of your child's spelling notebook to see which list they are working on. - Rote learning - writing words out the old fashioned way!
- Ransom words – Write your words by cutting out letters in a newspaper or magazine and glue them on a paper.
- ABC order- Write your words in alphabetical order.
- Dirty Words – Write your words in mud or sand.
- 3D words – Use modeling clay rolled thinly to make your words.
- Flashwriting – In a darkened room, use a flashlight to draw letters in the air.
- Magazine words – Use an old magazine or newspaper and find your word. Cut it out and glue it on paper.
I encourage 15-30 minutes of reading each day. Here are a few tips to get this happening at home...
- Encourage your child to read independently
- Take your child to the public library often
- Read to adults, Brothers, Sisters, other relatives
- Have access to newspapers, magazines, comics
- Help read recipes and instructions around the house
- Being read to by an adult or older brother/sister
- Take turns reading - a line or a paragraph each!
