How Stuff Works

Today in Room 19 we did a science experiment to begin our inquiry of 'How Stuff Works'.

In the experiment we discovered how to blow up a balloon without using our breath!

The things we needed were...
Baking soda
White vinegar
A fizzy drink bottle
A spoon
A funnel
A balloon
Measuring cup

This is how we made it...
First we put the balloon on the funnel. We poured 2 spoonfuls of the baking soda into the balloon. We took the balloon off the funnel and put the funnel into the bottle. Next we poured white vinegar into the bottle. We put the balloon full of baking soda onto the neck of the bottle and.....
                                the balloon blew up!

If you want to try this exciting experiment at home, here is the link to it!

This is what we saw...

We saw the bottle start to fizz and the balloon got bigger and bigger and bigger! By Pippa and Lucy

We felt the balloon get hotter. By Reco and Rose

We saw the balloon start to bulge and we felt it get warmer than all the other balloons. By Sophie and Paige

We saw the balloon swell up and we saw the mixture fizzing. By George and James

Here we are in action!

Kiwiana Day

Our Native to New Zealand inquiry in Term 2 was a great success!

We learnt so much about our culture. We learnt how to say our mihi in Maori and created a visual mihi too.

Our visual mihi showed our culture,
our environment, our personalities and our families.

On the last day of term, we had a celebration of our learning. We dressed in a Kiwiana theme and made kiwi burgers too!

Check out our fantastic video below...

Native to New Zealand

Welcome to Term 2!

This term our inquiry focus is Native to New Zealand and we are exploring what it means to be a kiwi and how we can express this through music and art.

Your first task is to research famous icons from small New Zealand towns. Have you seen any of these before?

Here are some links to help you complete your first task.

Mystery Reader

Last week in Room 19 we had our first Mystery Reader for the year!

Nicole, a friend of mine, came into Room 19 and read us the Smartest Giant in town by Julia Donaldon. The story was about George, a kind giant who gave all away all his clothes to others who needed them more than he did! We found the story funny because we have a George in our class! We also loved the funny things the giant said.
